Eddie Welsh

How did you begin your career and what made you get into the industry?
My first interest in the entertainment industry came when I was 10 and saw a production of Jesus Christ Superstar. I was astounded by the lighting and intrigued to discover how they created the effects. I started in the industry at university studying Technical Production in Brisbane and from there moved onto working on numerous professional productions in venues across Australia.

What do you like about the lighting industry in general?
I love the people in the industry. Everyone is working towards a common goal; everyone in the industry does it because they have a passion for the business and the production of high quality entertainment. This makes for a great working environment where you find friends for life. I also love the variety of the industry, no two days are the same and no two productions are the same, there will always be a different problem or scenario that requires you to adapt your skill set to. I have been fortunate to work on a number of amazing productions and have met many creative and talented individuals in this industry.

What does a day in the life of Eddie Welsh at Jands involve?
A coffee always starts my day, but after that a day can be extremely varied. My job incorporates all aspects of lighting within Jands, I can be working on an article for one of our e-newsletters in the morning, at lunchtime I might field a support call for a question on console operation, then in the afternoon I could be doing a demo for a prospective customer with a new piece of lighting equipment, or designing a solution for a new venue.

So far, what do you like most about working for Jands?
I like being able to have faith in the brands that we distribute and the equipment we manufacture. I can always recommend the most professional and comprehensive solution to a customer and know that it will always be a product at the forefront of the industry.

What is your favourite product at the moment and why?
My favourite product at the moment would have to be the new ETC Selador Desire LED wash lights. Coming from a background primarily based in theatre, LED has always been a foreign concept, it never matched your tungsten rig and the colour always looked so digitised. I believe these new fixtures from ETC will change this. ETC has spent a lot of time and money investing in new technology and new features to allow LED not just to fit with a tungsten rig but to excel within it. As we move towards a “greener” world, theatre will have to adapt to LED technology and with Desire, ETC has forged the path with a more refined professional LED lamp. The Desire is so customisable and powerful that it will do the job for even the most finicky of Lighting Designer, at a fraction of the power draw.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time outside of Jands?
I enjoy being active and love the water, whether that be diving or fishing or a combination of both. I am also quite partial to a game of squash or touch football. One of my favourite ways to relax is to cook; I find it a great creative outlet. There isn’t much better than cooking something for friends that tastes delicious and then enjoying it with them.
