Interview With Craig Abbott

Jands Introduce New Staff Member to the Technical Resource Group
Jands are pleased to announce the appointment of Craig Abbott, Technical Representative (Production Audio) within the Technical Resource Group (TRG) department.

In this interview we get to know Craig and learn how he started in the audio industry.

Craig Abbott

How did you begin your career and what made you get into the audio industry?
I first started in the industry playing keys on stage with some great cover/tribute bands and then became more interested with what was going on behind the scenes and how the shows were put together, rather than performing in them. After a few years of mixing for small pub bands I was offered the FOH gig for Noiseworks at Festival Hall in Melbourne. And it has cascaded from there.

What do you like about the audio industry?
There are many different facets of the audio industry and I can’t just put it down to one item that blows me away. The ever increasing changes with control of audio via wireless or Ethernet are very impressive.

What does a day in the life of Craig Abbott at Jands involve?
My day can consist of many different tasks. Always many emails to answer. The greatest thing for me is being able to grab a product of the shelf and being able to touch, look and listen. This is the best way for me to learn and pass onto others.

What is your favourite product that has recently been released and why?
My favourite product would have to be the Souncraft Si Compact range of digital consoles. As I have operated many analogue desks over my time and can understand the frustration of Engineers out there in trying to get a grasp on this digital technology. Soundcraft has produced an extremely friendly to navigate but yet very powerful range of consoles.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time outside of Jands?
Still love mixing the occasional band on a weekend. And enjoy hitting the roads on my Triumph Motorcycle.

What do you never leave home without?
A roll of gaffa tape and a credit card.

Funniest or nightmare story (tour or install)
I suppose funny and nightmare all in one was setting up a room with full PA and lighting for a 2000 person sit down dinner and show only to find out 10 minutes before doors open that we should have been in the room next door! (Name of venue and band withheld).
