As Productions get larger and more complex with many departments needing precision coordination, communication systems are now the most necessary ‘glue’ holding those productions together. From small community theatre to massive military operations and space travel, these systems are the most essential part in staging any type combined effort involving hundreds, even thousands of people.
The purpose of any communication system is to relay messages to either a single person or a group of people to achieve a single goal… A professional performance..
The questions you need to ask yourself when designing a communications system are quite simple: How many people do I need to communicate to? How many groups or “rings” are associated with those people? What is the distance between the people? (backstage to FOH or Sydney to New York) What are the physical cable restrictions in my situation?
Types of communication systems:
Party-line: These systems can be as simple as a couple of beltpacks with headset connected by microphone cable to a PSU, up to a Four channel masterstation with beltbacks, wall panels, speakerstaions, program input, stage announce/relay output and connection to other communication devices such as a Matrix.
Wireless: Wireless communications give you the ability to roam your space freely with out the restriction of being tethered a by microphone cable. These systems can range in size from simple 2 – 4 user stations to large multi-zone 50 user systems.
Matrix: Point to Point or group communication can be made simple with use of a matrix system. These flexible solutions to modern day communication woes can make even the most complex products simple.
VoIP (Voice over IP): From Sydney to Perth or Brisbane to New York, VoIP communications make critical cues a breeze over long distances. Using standard networking protocols you are able to co-ordinate events without the expense of dedicated lease lines.
